What is Chromecast? Why are the so-called set-top boxes for TV sets popular? It is worth refreshing yourself with information in this area and recalling the advantages of devices from the Chromecast family.

Google Chromecast is popular with many consumers. Why is it like that? Because not all TVs have Smart TV functionality. What is the mentioned Smart TV? In short, it is an option to use the benefits of the Internet on your TV set. The Smart TV function allows you to browse websites, as well as use applications and streaming services, which translates into the ability to run movies from YouTube, Netflix or even HBO GO and many other platforms.

Unfortunately, not everyone has a Smart TV, but there is an easy way to enrich your equipment with additional opportunities that interest us. One of the popular methods will be buying Google Chromecast. Before we go over the latest Chromecast, let’s recall a brief history of these attachments from Google.

The beginnings of Google Chromecast

Google Cast was made available in 2013, and Chromecast hit the market with it. The first device in this series looks almost the same as a flash drive. However, if we look at it more closely, we start to notice the differences and notice the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) plug. The first-generation Chromecast is to be plugged into a free HDMI port, and on the other hand, it must be powered using a USB connector.

The flash drive-like form has its drawbacks, as it can ultimately be inconvenient for some TV owners. This is because it sticks out after plugging in and can sometimes be hooked on. Another problem may be bending of the adapter under its own weight and gradual loosening from the HDMI port. Accordingly, the later generations of Google Chromecast took a slightly different look (the form of a disk on a flexible cable). What has not changed is the main task of the device, which is to enable multimedia streaming, e.g. from a phone or laptop, straight to the TV screen, even if it does not have the Smart TV function.

The first generation hit the market on July 24, 2013. The second generation, with a completely redesigned appearance, hit the market on September 29, 2015. The Ultra variant appeared on November 6, 2016. The third generation arrived on October 10, 2018. The fourth generation is referred to as “with Google TV” and was released on September 30, 2020.

What are the benefits of Chromecast 4?

The latest Chromecast 4 equipped with Google TV is the most convenient solution for many, for several reasons. First of all, in one small device with an HDMI plug and USB-C input, we have a separate TV set with an intuitive interface, so there is no need to involve additional equipment such as a smartphone. Google TV, i.e. an overlay for Android TV, will support us in the scope of the presented streaming services.

The main screen in Chromecast with Google TV allows you to quickly and conveniently find our applications and recommended programs, movies, series. It is simply a more intuitive and simplified solution, often convincing users who previously had different comments, for example about Chromecast 3.

Chromecast 4 is convenience

In addition, a remote control was included for the first time. This makes the operation of the Chromecast model with Google TV more convenient. The appearance of the aforementioned remote control is minimalist, but this does not have a negative impact on its functionality. In addition, you can still easily use the voice control. If someone cares about it, the Chromecast 4 can, for example, connect a USB-C hub, and then connect a mouse, keyboard or game controller to such an adapter (there is also a wireless pairing option). Included with Chromecast 4:

  • pilot,
  • power adapter,
  • battery,
  • power cord.

Finally, it should be emphasized that the latest Chromecast 4 supports 4K UHD at 60 frames per second, HDR and Dolby Atmos sound, which for many people can be extremely important. By the way, it is worth mentioning that although this is not the main function of Chromecast from Google TV, game streaming is possible and with high-speed internet there is a chance to play many titles quite comfortably.

The popularity of Chromecast 4 is related to the relatively low price with the possibility of significantly extending the functionality of the TV. It may be that the mentioned TV does not have the Smart TV function and we want to provide it at a low cost, or e.g. it has such a function, but we are not satisfied with its quality or it is simply not supported with updates anymore, which causes noticeable problems.

Chromecast 3

It is true that we will not discuss the first and second generation Chromecast, but it should be noted that despite the fact that Chromecast 3 belongs to the older generation, in some cases it is still worth being interested in.

Chromecast 3 does not have a remote control included, no Google TV interface, no Bluetooth, it is necessary to use a smartphone or computer, no 4K support. It is true that there are a few shortcomings compared to Chromecast 4, but it is still a relatively attractive and affordable Full HD streaming add-on (1920 x 1080) that will turn your regular TV into a Smart TV.
